About Parc Monceau Paris

This chic and elegant park in the west of Paris is one of the few where you can relax on the lawn in summer. A true haven of peace and harmony in a privileged district, both for the opulence of the bourgeois residences and for the presence near many quality museums, Cernuschi, Camondo, Jacquemart-André. Appreciated both by neighborhood joggers who run around the towers like so many sand circles and battalions of children leaving school, Parc Monceau has several high entrances worthy of Place Stanislas in Nancy, both its wrought iron gates are prestigious. Its origins date back to 1787 when the Duke of Chartres, father of Louis-Philippe, had an exotic garden laid out near the village of Monceau, then at the gates of Paris. The landscapers Carmontelle and Blaikie imagined an unusual greenery, populated by artificially reconstituted natural reliefs: rivers, rocks, caves. Today, a basin surrounded by ruined columns, the old colonnade of Naumachie, still remains. In 1793, the Park was joined by the Octroi des Fermiers Généraux building. This neo-antique rotunda was a real toll booth to collect taxes on goods entering the capital. In 1860, the village of Monceau was attached to Paris. Investors, including the Pereire brothers, seized this virgin and wooded plain and, in a few years, began a residential development in the wake of Haussmannian Paris.
